Once, it was hard to get a good glass of wine on the stretch of Toorak Road that leads from Chapel Street to Punt Road. Adam North, David Maconochie and Marty McCaig changed that when they opened South Press Wine House in 2015.

Inside a former furniture store, the stylish wine bar is decked out in earthy, green-grey tones. Floor-to-ceiling wine racks divide the front room, with brown-leather banquettes running down one side, and the bar down the other. There’s another space up the back, a function-style space upstairs, and a leafy courtyard.


The wine offering is extensive, with about 20 by-the-glass options, plus bottles, available to drink in or take away. Non-wine options include sparkling water on tap, four classic cocktails by the Everleigh Bottling Co., basic spirits, beer and cider.

A drink purchase gets you a bottomless bowl of roasted corn kernels to snack on, but if you want something more substantial, there’s a decent selection of wine-friendly nibbles.

North and Maconochie are co-owners of Victoria’s Hopkins River Beef, so the house-made jerky is definitely worth sampling. Beyond that, expect to find a range of cheese, charcuterie, and things such as marinated olives or almonds.
